Project or Internship - Brand analysis
Positions available: 3-4 (individual or as a team) Being ten years old as an organization, we would like to conduct a review of our brand to understand how our target audiences resonate with our work. Our goals for the project are: To understand how we can better communicate our impact to potential program participants; How our brand (colours, name of the organization and of our programs, slogans, etc) resonate with our audience of young changemakers in our three market segments (under 18, 18-25, 25+), plus our potential donor base. What changes could be made to refresh our brand and better help us articulate the impact we'd like to see in our work. We will provide access to previous research projects and program participants for interviews and other statistics and reports we have available. If an internship, we will provide: Shadowing opportunities to see how our program works; Regular check-ins to provide feedback on project direction; Supports and resources to implement the intern's plan, with the intern as the project lead
Project or Internship - Membership Analysis & Restructuring
Positions available: 2-3 (individual or as a team) This year, we have changed our membership to The Starfish Canada from a $5 lifetime membership to a $10 annual fee. To date, we have not hit our targets for annual membership and would like a project or intern to help us refine and revisit this process to ensure we set an appropriate target for next year. The intern or team will: Learn the functionality of the CRM system that administers our organization, Keela (keela.co) Through conversations with our team, determine what are products and/or services we can offer our membership to ensure we continuously provide them with great value (this can include current products/services or new ones, like a magazine) Determine how to best set up this process within our systems (as automated as possible) Supports for the intern or team include: Mentorship and guidance from multiple team members of The Starfish Canada Access to leadership team members for informational interviews This is intended to be an analysis of our current work in addition to implementing those recommendations. We believe in learning by doing - a simple recommendations document or presentation will not suffice. Since our CRM contains confidential information about our funding and the contact information of our community, the intern or team will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement and will be given @thestarfish.ca email addresses for the duration of their time with us.

Project or internship - Online writing & mentorship program analyst
We've built an award-winning editorial program that pairs volunteer writers and editors in a peer-to-peer program that accelerates aptitude in writing for online audiences. Editors coach and mentor writers on best approaches to writing about environmental issues in an online space, intentionally building skills while producing great content for our online journal. With this project in its tenth year, we'd like an intern or project team to review our process and procedures, provide recommendations that could help us improve our processes and procedures, and ideally provide or execute an implementation plan. Our goals for the project are to understand: How our writers and editors (past and present) feel are our program strengths and where those things could be improved; How to meaningfully recognize writers and editors for their contributions, recognizing our online format; What things we could do to create broader appeal for our program to our target market of 18-25-year-old people with interest in environmental matters; If and how a chapter model could assist writers and editors with meaningfully engage each other. We will provide access to writers and editors for interviews and other statistics and reports we may have available. If an internship, we will provide: Shadowing opportunities to see how our program works; Regular check-ins to provide feedback on project direction; Supports and resources to implement the intern's plan, with the intern as the project lead
Virtual Internship Opportunity: Office administration and event production assistant
Our organization is able to offer a virtual internship opportunity for one student as our office administration and event production assistant. This internship will focus on helping us manage our internal systems so we can continue to provide excellent care and service to young environmental leaders across Canada. During the internship, we will ask the student to help maintain our day-to-day operations. We also plan to host virtual events over the summer, where we would appreciate administrative support from this person where possible. The intern will be asked to use these online tools: Squarespace (website platform) Keela (CRM platform) Slack (communications platform) Zoom (videoconferencing) Eventbrite (event management) Google suite services (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Hangouts) Hootsuite (social media scheduling) * if the intern prefers not to create posts, pre-create content will be made for the intern to post Experience in these platforms (or similar platforms) is preferred but not required. As an online organization, all of our systems have been built virtually. Students will only need an internet connection and a laptop (preferably with a webcam for videoconferencing) to complete this internship. At the end of this experience, we hope that the student has gained skills in online program management in a practical setting. We will plan to communicate with our virtual intern using Zoom meetings and Slack communication channels. We are willing to work with the intern on other channels if accessibility considerations are requested.
Fund Development Strategy
Since getting our charitable status late last year, we are keen to find a model that can help us grow our organizational capacity, ideally supported but not dependent on large grants with short-term cycles. Our goals include: Developing a clear donor relations strategy that can grow our monthly donor base; Determining a communications strategy that will help us talk to potential corporate sponsors (tactics could include the "pitch" and slide decks); A road map for how we can create captivating events (online or offline) that could act as lead generators for potential monthly or one-time donors.
Market Research in Education
With our growing desire to run educational workshops in schools across the country, we're looking to understand more about the education sector (K-12 school districts) and how we can reasonably tap into that market. With our first partnership with the Toronto District School board in place, we're hoping to determine our best next step. Our goals for the project are: An understanding of how to strategically scale our work in Ontario (and possibly British Columbia, depending on project scope); Generate a Targeted Account List (TAL) that could help us identify 50-100 school districts that might be in greatest need of our services (an actionable list would include contact information for influencers/personnel with potential decision-making and purchasing authority), along with suggested messaging that could help us book meetings with potential school district personnel An understanding of what pricing structure would best allow us to create a genuine partnership with these school districts (perhaps based on # of students in the district?) while also generating enough revenue to cover basic costs. An analysis of our current workshop offerings and what styles and mediums could complement that work to provide a more wholesome package for school districts, including how it differentiates ourselves from potential competitors.
