Initially, I had a career as a primary care paramedic. However, after witnessing many traumatic events, I became motivated to pursue a career where I could improve population health and the resources available to the public. I obtained my BSc with a major in Human Sciences, where I learned that I could explore my observations in depth by investigating research questions to inform healthcare, policy, and interventions. I also developed a keen interest in statistics and the benefits of data analysis and interpretation in conjunction with study findings.
I am currently pursuing a Master in Health Informatics at the University of Waterloo, where I am gaining additional experience in data analysis using R, creating databases and running queries using SQL, and developing data visualizations using Power BI. I have exposure to other programs including Python, SPSS, and MS Access. I am seeking hands-on experience applying these skills in a real-world setting.

Data analysis and presentation for tick and tick-borne disease surveillance

The main objective of this project is to analyze and display data collected passively through our tick testing service. Part of our mandate as a company is to to publish tick and tick-borne disease surveillance data yearly based on data collected from ticks submitted to our laboratory for testing. This data includes spatial and temporal information about where and when ticks were encountered, what activities users were engaged in when they encountered the ticks, the types of pathogens detected in each tick, and which demographics are disproportionately affected. In previous years, this data has been analyzed and displayed using accessible tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Powerpoint) and Google MyMaps. This year, we are looking to improve the data analysis and presentation by using more powerful statistical and GIS tools.
