Details

As part of my research dissemination, I have an ongoing independent curatorial practice (which primarily takes the form of physical exhibitions, with occasional performance art series and screenings of video art.) Currently, I am assessing the feasibility of a number of different curatorial projects related to the 2SLGBTQ+ identities and histories, as well as (queer) artistic interventions into normative spaces, practices, discourses and aesthetics (including fitness culture, Canadian art histories, and commercial design).

Deliverables

Research and compile a list of past exhibitions related to the above-mentioned themes (these exhibitions may have taken place anywhere in the world, but exhibitions that occurred in Canada will take precedence in the research.)

-Research and compile a list of contemporary artists and/or artworks that address the above-mentioned themes. This list will include the artists’ names, titles of the artworks, dates the artworks were made, images of the artworks, the exhibition histories of the artworks, artist website URLs, short artist biographies, and short write-ups of the artworks (which the student may compile from a number of sources, such as the artists’ websites.)

-If necessary/relevant, conduct archival research at the City of Edmonton Archives and/or the Provincial Archives of Alberta to identify historical events and sites related to the above-mentioned themes.

-If necessary/relevant, support the writing of grant applications to assist with realizing one or more of these exhibitions.

Mentorship

I will support the student through regular meetings/check ins, during which I will provide feedback on their progress and help them to identify sites for future research. I will mentor the student on the process of realizing an independent curatorial project, and (if deemed relevant), I will accompany them to archives to teach them archival research methods.
